Below is a compilation of opportunities that I have put together based on my own experiences or on my colleagues' experiences. This list is by no means a complete list of available opportunities. Always look for opportunities on the web or ask other students/faculty/post docs/etc!

Internships + Scholarships

Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS)

Deadline: February

Benefits:

  • 10-week summer internship at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)
  • option to return for additional summer internships
  • optional scholarship to cover tuition
  • travel funds to attend scientific meetings
  • leadership training, writing workshop, community outreach activities, and more!

Eligibility:

  • sophomore or older undergraduate students (must have at least one semester of undergraduate studies remaining after the initial summer)
  • cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • major in atmospheric science or a related field such as the geosciences, biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, or social science
  • member of an underrepresented community within the atmospheric sciences (other special situations such as economic limitations may also be considered)

NOAA Educational Partnership Program Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Deadline: January

Benefits:

  • two 10-week summer internships at NOAA facilities
  • scholarship to cover tuition
  • travel funds to attend a scientific meeting

Eligibility:

  • US citizen
  • full-time student enrolled in a participant minority serving instituion
  • cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher
  • major in oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing technology, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education

NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Program

Deadline: January

Benefits:

  • 10-week summer internship at a NOAA facility
  • scholarship to cover tuition
  • travel funds to attend a scientific meeting

Eligibility:

  • US citizen
  • full-time second year student in a four-year academic program or full-time third year student in a five-year undergraduate program
  • cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • major in oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathema tics, engineering, remote sensing technology, physical and social sciences including geograp hy, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education

Scholarships

American Meteorological Society (AMS) Named Undergraduate Scholarships

Deadline: between January-February

Benefits:

  • Scholarship (up to $1,000 - $5,000)
  • Travel funds to attend the AMS Annual Meeting
  • Networking events at the AMS Annual Meeting

Eligibility:

  • junior undergraduate student
  • major in the atmospheric or related sciences
  • cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher

National Weather Association (NWA) Scholarships

Deadlines: various (commonly April, May, or November)

Benefits:

  • Scholarship (up to $1,000 - $2,500)
  • Free NWA membership

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate and graduate students
  • Some scholarships require an interest on a specific topic within meteorology
  • Member of an underrepresented group in meteorology (***ONLY for David Sankey Minority Scholarship***)

Internships

Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO)

Deadline: February

Benefits:

  • 10-week summer internship at JISAO, NOAA, or University of Washington

Eligibility:

  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • junior or younger undergraduate students

NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP)

Deadline: February

Benefits:

  • 8-week summer internship at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center
  • participation in research flights

Eligibility:

  • US citizens
  • junior undergraduate students

Fellowships

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

Deadline: November

Benefits:

  • three-year funding support consisting of: (a) $34,000 annual stipend, and (b) $12,000 cost of education allowance (traditionally used for tuition, but could be used for other expenses if the tuition cost is less than $12,000)
  • five-year academic support consisting of: (a) opportunities for funded international collaborations, (b) opportunities for internships at federal laboratories, and (c) access to supercomputing time
  • flexibility of independent research at any accredited U.S. institution of your choice

Eligibility:

  • US citizen, national, or permanent resident
  • senior undergraduate student (at the moment of applying), or first- or second-year graduate student (with no Masters degree)
  • intend to pursue a research-based MS or PhD in a NSF-supported field

American Meteorological Society (AMS) Graduate Fellowships

Deadline: between January-February

Benefits:

  • $25,000 for the first 9 months of graduate school
  • travel funds to attend the AMS Annual Meeting
  • networking events at the AMS Annual Meeting

Eligibility:

  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • senior undergraduate student (planning to enter the first year of graduate study in the fall)
  • major in the atmospheric or related sciences
  • cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher

Workshops

American Meteorological Society (AMS) Summer Policy Colloquium

A 10-day intensive colloquium about science policy and how scientists can inform the policy making process.
